The newly opened Winter garden at Wakehurst has a magnificent bench at its heart. It’s framed by a magnificent witch hazel, which served to brighten up the coldest of winter days at the official opening.

Friday Bench: Sit down and recharge

Sitting down to recharge your batteries has taken on a whole new meaning in Bristol’s Millennium Square, thanks to an art installation called The Energy Tree.

The solar panels store energy which is fed through those pipes you can see above the bench. These allow visitors to sit down, relax, and recharge the batteries in their mobile phones.

Bubblegum Pink

I went to Bristol by train recently and was surprised to find this bright pink Gumdrop near the ticket barrier. I whipped out my camera to take this photo, much to the amusement of the ticket attendant.

“That’s new, how long has it been here?” I asked her.

“Oh about a year”, she replied. So much for my powers of observation then.

“Not only that”, chimed in a fellow passenger, “it’s made out of recycled chewing gum.”

I looked more closely and by gum, she’s right…

This might be the smallest telephone box ever! Squeezed inside is the brightest of yellow phones, which looks quite out of place when compared to its more ancient surroundings.

I found this at the gateway to Powis Castle, so we assumed it’s to ask for entry when the gate is locked.
