The Victorian elegance that is the #Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin. A gorgeous place for #breakfast, a real treat that won't break the bank when compared to the standard hotel fare nearby. This is a place where American history unfolded; Lyndon B Johnson was here on the night he was elected President in 1964. Built in 1886, via riches made by cattle ranching for $400,000, the mirrors alone in the Maximillian room are valued at $2.5 million. The hotel's bakery is worth a watch from the dining room - we saw croissants being made from dough rolled over 6 feet in length. Beautiful day for a belated #birthday treat and trip to #Clevedon to walk on the only Grade I listed pier open to the public. So good to have a blow along to the end, feel the sun on our faces and marvel at how quickly the tide comes in at this place with the second highest tidal range in the world. And now for something completely different! Producing samples for DNA and RNA analysis for a study looking into whether brain training can prevent or halt the effects of dementia. Not that I have dementia yet! The study is also looking at whether genetics plays a part, hence the samples. Amazing how long you can live in a place and still not know all of its secrets! I wandered into a car park yesterday to find this laden persimmon aka Sharon fruit tree brightening up a dull January day. As well as the fruit, the tree has a pleasing shape and the most tactile bark. A great start - in my view - to my #100newthings is this smart duvet cover I picked up in the January sales. A lot of people are posting about reusing and recycling existing items, but seeing the previous cover lasted well over 20 years, I couldn't resist this bargain. It also marks a shift away from clean geometrics to rich floral swirls. Starting my first #100cookbooks journey with this winter minestrone recipe courtesy of @leonrestaurants' delightful Happy Soups. See my #cooksnotes below for the minor adaptations I made. The result? Scrummy and perfect for today's frosty weather. It's a hug in a bowl 🍜 😊 #cooksnotes - I omitted the celery and onion and doubled the carrot, leek and tomatoes because these are what I had to hand. I used some of the last of the Christmas ham and its smokiness made a real difference to the result and also meant no extra salt was needed. Oh and the kale was left out as well because hubby hates all things brassica.
